Jachal to San juan: Fast night ride

Leaving Jachal

Thursday January 10, 2013, 160 km (99 miles) – Total so far: 470 km (292 miles)

We left Jachal at 9pm yesterday when it was about getting dark. Reaching the road 40 we quickly speeded up to an average speed of 22km per hour although the road was climbing up and down, same as in the last days of our rides.
We hardly did a break-only to pee and eat. There was no moonlight shining at all and the only light sources were the lights of our bikes.

Hanging out in Jachal: Organizing how we do the long stretch of 160km to San Juan

Jachal plaza

Wednesday January 9, 2013

Our argentinian way of life: we got up so late that we went directly to have lunch. This time a real bife de chorizo. While eating, we thought about getting to our next destination San Juan. Riding by day it seems impossible to us due to the hot temperature and the fact that there isn´t a possibility to buy water or food as there is no village at all.

Villa Union to Huaco: Feeling grilled

Yet the sun is throwing shadows-it´s still early...

Monday January 7, 2013, 130 km (81 miles) – Total so far: 248 km (154 miles)

As we were already experienced with the heat, we started at 6am to ride some time without having the sun. The road was going straight and wouldn´t do a curve for eternities. The surrounding was awesome with mountains and the sun slowly rising, we enjoyed the riding. Slowly temperature was rising but still one felt comfortable.

Rio Miranda-Villa Union: Cuesta de Miranda

Starting to climb up Cuesta de Miranda

Saturday January 5, 2013, 80 km (50 miles) – Total so far: 118 km (73 miles)

The night was accompanied by the unfamiliar sounds of pure nature: wood cracking, little animals and the wind in the trees. The only light was the fool moon shining above the area. It was reflecting shadows of the trees on the roof of our tents. It was quite scary to watch them move in the rhythm of the wind. When there were clouds crossing the moonlight, it seemed like someone just turned the lights down low, and then turned it on again.

Chilecito to Camping Rio Miranda: Camping- very natural

We are on the road

Friday January 4, 2013, 38 km (24 miles) – Total so far: 38 km (24 miles)

In the morning I went to the bus station with my son to get the last bike. When the bus arrived I first couldn´t see it and I already thought, they didn´t send it. My blood pressure was already rising when I saw it hidden beneath all the other luggage.

Exploring „Chilecito“: Still missing one of our bikes

You think it is Rio? Well this is Chilecito

Thursday January 3, 2013

After several calls yesterday in the afternoon the bus company was ready to send one bike. They interpreted their given promise to send the bikes one day later in the argentinian way-when we called, they said „well you know, we´ll send it while we can, could be tomorrow or could be next week or the following week-it´s the high season you know“.

Buenos Aires-Chilecito by bus (arriving the next day): Two bikes left behind

Our luggage at Retiro Central Bus Station,Bs As

Tuesday January 1, 2013

The bus terminal of BsAs is quiet for it´s new year´s day and most of the people stay at home curing the hangover of the previous night….The bus company „General Urquiza“is the only one that does the long stretch to to the small town of „Chilecito“, and they seem to be very aware of this fact.
