Sigiriya: Relaxing and taking it easy

Friday January 31, 2014

Today we took a day off. Off of everything-we just didn´t do anything. Relaxing on our terrace, I took some cricket lessons with the son of the guesthouse, nothing more. Nice day.

Kandy-Sigiriya: Getting away from Kandy city jungle

The huge trees spend some shadow

Thursday January 30, 2014, 99 km (62 miles) – Total so far: 1,588 km (987 miles)

To get out of Kandy took us almost one hour. The traffic here is crazy, crazy, crazy. And everyone drives like crazy, crazy, crazy. And the noise, the steadily blowing horns, the sickening smell of the exhaust emissions drive you even more crazy, crazy, crazy.

Kandy: Visiting the Botanic garden

View from our balcony

Tuesday January 28, 2014, 78 km (48 miles) – Total so far: 1,489 km (925 miles)

The botanic garden lies 7km from the town center, and we took a tuk-tuk to get there. It´s an adventure itself to have such a ride through the heavy traffic. If you are used to a careful style of driving, maybe better close your eyes. It´s got nothing to do with european driving here, another world.

Haputale-Nuwara Eliya: The highest and probably coldest town in Sri Lanka

Misty mountains in the morning at Haputale

27Saturday January 25, 2014, 52 km (32 miles) – Total so far: 1,411 km (877 miles)

Today we are setting off for the highest town in Sri Lanka: 1880m above sea level. It was a cold morning in Haputale. Cold winds that swept the mist of the mountains over the small road we took. It seemed to be like an unreal scene of a film, a very special mood,a very rough beauty.

Haputale: Lipton´s seat

Tea plantation around Lipton´s seat

Friday January 24, 2014

Today we did a little trip up to Lipton´s seat, the favorite place of Sir Walter Lipton. He was the founder of the „Lipton Tea Company“ in the 19th century. This place he visited whenever he needed inspiration and they say here he offered his tea to the royals at that time. The place is almost 2000m high and you can have a beautiful 360°view of the mountains and valleys around, all covered with tea plantations.

Haputale: Recovering strength after three days of cycling in the mountains

Haputale city

Thursday January 23, 2014

We tried to sleep long, but we were awake at only 7 o´clock in the morning. After breakfast we went to the town center to find a bike shop. There is a small one and the guy tried his best, but I wanted to adjust the
Threaded Headset, and at last he didn´t have the necessary tool.

Balangoda – Haputale: Spectacular views, steep climbs and again 1300m altitude difference

Beautiful scenery as we climb higher and higher

Wednesday January 22, 2014, 48 km (30 miles) – Total so far: 1,359 km (844 miles)

We started at half past seven at our very private hostel. The family was quite sad, that we were leaving already. For us it was one more time an astonishing experience how friendly and warm people are here.
