Tuesday January 14, 2014, 92 km (57 miles) – Total so far: 966 km (600 miles)
The first stretch of the road was going on hilly, and traffic got stronger. We were happy to take the B 35 heading south through Yala Nationalpark in Butalla. Probably we were the only two persons who were not eager to see elephants on the road, as we remembered very well when we were charged by one on Polonnaruwa road.
Besides some travelers by bike (again they didn´t stop! What´s wrong with those people??) shouted towards us while passing by „Watch out for the elephants! We went the stretch by truck!“ That wasn´t really inspiring confidence…..So we went with mixed feelings.
We knew from the locals that there was really quite a big chance to see them beside the road or crossing it. But we were lucky (every other person would consider it as unlucky), we didn´t even see one. Only the excrements -sometimes fresh- so we just seemed to have missed them for some moments.
In Tissamaharama was the big tourist hype, for they take off from here for jeep safaris into Yala Nationalpark. All full of hotels and Mini buses and tourists. We found a cheap guesthouse „Independ safaris“ near the center. All very basic, but for one night it´s o.k.
