We started at half past seven at our very private hostel. The family was quite sad, that we were leaving already. For us it was one more time an astonishing experience how friendly and warm people are here.

We didn´t sleep very good, as dogs kept on barking all night long, and the mattress gave you that “hammock-feeling”. We were up before the alarm was even ringing. At 6.45 a.m. we already were on our way to the city of Balangoda. The road was narrow and small but so beautiful.

Monday January 20, 2014, 91 km (57 miles) – Total so far: 1,208 km (751 miles)
It took us a while until we found the A 12 to Deniyaya, so we did some extra-kms, but not too bad. We were happy to get away from the heavy traffic of the main road down at the coast line. The road was climbing very softly and we enjoyed the ride.

The old town of Galle once was a fortress built by the Dutch in 1663. Meanwhile the UNESCO declared it a world heritage sight. Walking through the streets you easily notice the mixture of european and asian architecture, some buildings are colonial style.

It´s hot in Unawatuna! This morning we changed our room to an a/c option (wasn´t vacant yesterday), so tonight we´re going to sleep with cool, nice temperature. Before taking some refreshing bath in the ocean, I wanted to get cut my hair.

Today we cycled with the most traffic around us, since we arrived in Sri Lanka. Really bothering. Well, this is the high season for the south coast, and we already expected lively towns full of tourists.

Just hanging out. After breakfast a bath in the ocean with rough waves, but beautiful. We went to the little town of Tangalle in the afternoon and found a cafe where they serve „Lavazza“ italien coffee.
Wednesday January 15, 2014, 71 km (44 miles) – Total so far: 1,037 km (644 miles)
The day began with a real peacock-show. Beside the road there were four or five peacocks trying to impress the females that were around. They opened their beautiful feathers and moved their backs up and down as if they already were in action. For a while, we enjoyed watching them and then headed towards the short stretch of highway (maybe 20km long) direction Tangalle.
Tuesday January 14, 2014, 92 km (57 miles) – Total so far: 966 km (600 miles)
The first stretch of the road was going on hilly, and traffic got stronger. We were happy to take the B 35 heading south through Yala Nationalpark in Butalla. Probably we were the only two persons who were not eager to see elephants on the road, as we remembered very well when we were charged by one on Polonnaruwa road.

Monday January 13, 2014, 68 km (42 miles) – Total so far: 874 km (543 miles)
A very surprising A 4 road. So quiet, almost no traffic, a little bit hilly, running through a beautiful landscape-part of it right through the jungle. The rest is mountains,rice fields and sunshine. We found an injured snake on the road today.
