Kalmunai-Arugam Bay: Riding along the ocean

Palms everywhere

Saturday January 11, 2014, 75 km (47 miles) – Total so far: 806 km (501 miles)

We left at 7 in the morning. The village was already busy, but leaving it, there seemed to be no more traffic at all. Beautiful road along the ocean side, although the huge damage of the big Tsunami in 2004 is still visible along the coast-ruins of damaged houses, everything left and abandoned.

Kalkudah-Kalmunai: Road without sensations

Memories of the 30-year-civil war between tamils and singalese

Friday January 10, 2014, 78 km (48 miles) – Total so far: 731 km (454 miles)

We started at 7 o´clock in the morning to do a good amount of kms without the hot midday sun. Small villages and the sea, nothing special. In fact, the road seemed a little bit boring to us. We had some breakfast and coconut breaks on the road, and while chatting with people, we realized how many of the tamil people had already worked abroad.

Trincomalee-Kalkudah: Looking for some shadow

Leaving the Dyke rest guest house

Wednesday January 8, 2014, 118 km (73 miles) – Total so far: 653 km (406 miles)

At 7.30 we were back on the road. Our clothes were still humid when we put them on in the morning, for the air here in Trincomalee had so much humidity, that even though we hung them outside yesterday, they wouldn´t dry 100%. But that should change soon…..

Time to say good bye

Saturday January 4, 2014, 60 km (37 miles) – Total so far: 388 km (241 miles)

Hard to say good-bye to our host family of Mr. Milton in Sigirya! They gave us so much more but a roof over our heads: we enjoyed their kindness, their relaxed attitude, their help in any situation, their laughter and their ability to bring Sri Lanka straight into our hearts. Thank you so much!!!

Exploring Sigiryia – searching for the elephants: Kaudulla nationalpark safari

Our lovely Mahindra jeep

Thursday January 2, 2014

We took it easy this morning, sleeping until 9.00, then a wonderful breakfast. Feels like holidays!! Our guesthouse owner Milton had arranged a jeep-tour through the „Kaudulla Nationalpark“ for this afternoon, so we were supposed to see some elephants! We went together with the canadian couple from the room next door and it was really fun.
