Kalkudah-Kalmunai: Road without sensations

Friday January 10, 2014, 78 km (48 miles) – Total so far: 731 km (454 miles)

We started at 7 o´clock in the morning to do a good amount of kms without the hot midday sun. Small villages and the sea, nothing special. In fact, the road seemed a little bit boring to us. We had some breakfast and coconut breaks on the road, and while chatting with people, we realized how many of the tamil people had already worked abroad.

Most of them in muslim countries like Saudi-Arabia or Kuwait or Dubai. Some made good money there and then came back to built a house here in Sri Lanka, some had been exploited, ? had bad experiences-mostly those who worked in Saudi-Arabia. They all could speak some arabic and it made them happy when we greeted them with a “Salam aleikum”.

When we arrived in Kalmunai, the Imam was already singing his midday prayer from the mosque, and once more we noticed, that the east cost is typically populated by the muslim population of Sri Lanka.
We found a guesthouse close to the beach (one of the two or three that exist in this little town), the “Holiday beach resort”.

In the evening we took a walk on the beach and my feet were touched by a jellyfish as we walked through the water. It burnt like hell.
The resort manager and staff are very helpful and they were even allowing us to have a beer in the evening, although the place is muslim-run and normally no alcohol is allowed. Lucky we are!!
