If you know you got pedal 32km always going up, you think you are mentally prepared, but still reality can be hard. We started at 6.30 pm and from stepping out the front door of our hostel, the road was going up. To the top of Irazu you got to pass over 2000m of altitude, so the climbs are quite steep all the time, up to 17%.

There’s not anything to do in the city of Cartago, so we were just taking a walk around, visiting the two sights that the town has to offer: The ruins of the old church and the Basilica.

At 6 o’clock we finally arrived at the airport in Alajuela, Costa Rica.It turned out to be such a long flight.Although we knew it would take us ca. 15 hours to get here it seemed endless. We had to get out of the plane in Santo Domigo, where we had a small stop and that took us also 1,5 hours.

Today we just relaxed,explored the city and went to the bus station to buy our tickets to go back to Buenos Aires.There is not much to do here and the town is not nice at all no reason to stay here.

We started early at 6:30am.Getting out of the city was easy,that early there was not much traffic-only some party people from the fiestas the night before.The sun was rising slowly and we could get quite a good impression of what was waiting for us today. About the route we didn’t have much information but it seemed easy to find the way.Besides we had two maps: an argentinian one and a german one, „make assurance double sure“!!

In the morning we got a temperature schock going down from our Ac room to the lobby where they were offering breakfast.It was hot and humid like the usual weather in this part of Argentina.In the town of Catamarca itself there is actually not much to do.

We went to have breakfast at 7am,like always argentinian breakfast style,only this time there was some fruit salad that unfortunately tasted like the refrigerator.Almost 8am we were on the road,luckily the road had shoulders on its side.The landscape didnt change very much also tobacco and sugarcane but far away you already could see the mountains we were going to cross.

First day with hard rain.Already in the night it started to rain and it wouldn’t stop.We started at 6am and we prepared ourselves with some garbage bags but it was senseless against the rain.After riding 8 km and almost wet to our bones we stopped at a small hut beside the road to get shelter from the rain.As we were wet, we felt the low temperature and we started to get really cold.
