San Rafael to Nihuil: Breathtaking landscapes

Sunday January 20, 2013, 92 km (57 miles) – Total so far: 988 km (614 miles)

From San Rafael you can decide between two options: Take the paved route passing „La Cuesta de los Terneros“ or the unpaved route through the mountains passing „Valle Grande“ and „Canyon del Atuel“ which is the more scenery way. We decided to do the option through the mountains to get one more of the nature experience Argentina has to offer.

Arriving at the village of „Nihuil“ we were sure to have made the better choice, because the landscapes on the way again were just awesome and breathtaking. Approximately 1.200 m of height were exhausting to go on the unpaved road with our heavy bikes, but it was worth the effort. Canyons, small rivers, barrier lakes in between and the colorful mountains made it an unforgettable ride.

Before we reached the village we had to pass again a very steep section of the road, so we had to gather our last energies after doing like 85kms, that was really tough. But as a reward, we found a luxury hotel in „Nihuil“ which was just about to open. The name is „Nihuil Hotel“ and offers restaurant, pool, sauna, air condition etc.

Heaven in the middle of nowhere opposite of the beautiful lake. But anyway, one can find some cheaper options like camping or some cabanas here, too. For us this was just a perfect day.
