Polonnaruwa-The ruins: Our last site in the cultural triangle region

Sunday January 5, 2014, 12 km (7 miles) – Total so far: 400 km (249 miles)

We had a very nice breakfast in our guesthouse with the relaxing view onto rice fields with a lot of birds and Peacocks.Tomorrow we`ll be heading for the coast. So our last visit in the so called cultural triangle region were the ruins of Polonnaruwa.

Though the entry fee again was quite high (like in Sigirya) it`s worth seeing them. The archeological area lies inside a huge park, and some of the old houses and temples of the former city are quite impressive. Changing rulers of different religions left their footprint here, hindus and buddhists, all about 1000 years A.D. and so are the statues.

As we went with our bikes, it was easy for us to get to the different sites, and we made about 10 km. Most people use private tuk tuks or cars with guides. We were comfortable with the bikes.
