Thursday January 18, 2018, 52 km – Total so far: 52km
The night was short again. At 4 p.m. I was already awake and sweating like crazy. Think I really caught a bad cold. Well, I could fall asleep again but when I woke up at 6 o´clock I was still with fever.
I measured 38,3°C and Anette said she´d rather stay for one more night here to recover but I decided to move on and ride to Chilaw.
After the breakfast we packed our last stuff and voilà – another thing missing that we obviously had forgotten at home: no sunscreen on board ladies and gentlemen! So the first action after we started our tour was to get some sunscreen -somewhere. Things like that really suck! But what you´re going to do about it? So before we hit the road we got ourselves some sunscreen in a supermarket.
We turned on the main road and it was very busy. The cars and trucks are really loud and constantly blowing their horns. We tried to get away from it as soon as possible. We turned onto a side road and headed for the road that leads to Chilaw along the coast.
It´s name is “Beach road” and its worth the little effort finding it. You can cycle just next to the ocean. Only some small fishing villages between you and the shore. Everywhere they are selling fresh fish, awesome.
About 20km before Chilaw we stopped for a drink in small place on the roadside and ate some bananas.
A very relaxed ride, just the sun was hot. So we really were happy to have this sri lankan sunscreen…. Finally in Chilaw we easily found the Hotel that we were checking out in the internet before. It is called “Athina” and we really can recommend staying here.
The owner and his wife are super friendly and lovely people with millions of ideas how Sri Lanka could develop in the future with good business made by good men. It´s really impressive and inspiring to talk to them and they offer heavenly tasting food, home made of course.
Rooms are basic and clean at a reasonable price about 15€ a night. (3000 Rupies). A lot of cyclists stay here, so don´t miss this wonderful place!
