Visiting the volcan Poas which is close to Alajuela (39 kms) you`ve got to start early, because later during the day usually clouds cover the crater so you won`t see very much. We started at 7 o`clock in the morning (the owner of our hostel „Mango Verde“ took us with his car for the usual taxi price) and we had incredible views of the crater without many people.
The only thing is that it`s bitter cold up there (almost 2700m) and you should wear warm clothes when you go there. We really enjoyed that fantastic spectacle of clouds produced by the still active crater and there is a smell of sulfur in the air. Also the woods around the crater are worth seeing.
After we went to a coffee plantation where you can make the so called „Doka coffee Tour“, a tour where you get to know how coffee is grown – from the seed to your cup. Very interesting, but also quite expensive entry (20 USD each).
