Akumal – Cancun: Our last day cycling

110 km (68 miles) – Total so far: 1,026 km (638 miles)

The last day cycling started early. As we knew, there were more than one hundred km to go we tried to do some km without sun and heat.

The road was like a highway, easy to cycle but a lot of traffic. It was so noisy you couldn´t communicate without screaming at each other. Unfortunately this is the only possible street to get to Cancun if you are coming from the southern coastline.
So the only thing that again and again attracted our attention are the countless monsters of resorts, hotel complexes with Spa, golf course and sometimes private beach. I really can´t imagine to spend my holidays – not even a day – in such a fancy tourist accommodation where a one night stay costs more than people here earn per month.
It would make me feel sick, I guess. So the Riviera Maya will never be one of my favorite holiday regions. It´s absolutely made for mass tourism.
We got close to Cancun at about 3p.m. and google maps send us to our last little adventure tour finding our B&B. We cycled for maybe 4km through bushland with really bad, dirty, narrow roads where suddenly in between huge buildings surrounded by high walls appeared out of nowhere.
My wife said they were all Narco-hideaways and she really was scared someone could come out with a gun asking what we are doing in his terrain…..
But the road led us into the City just right into the quarter Sta. Fe where our hostel is located. So Mr. Google was right and when we told the hostel owners where we came from they said this area will be a new quarter of the City where they are going to build a lot of housing, soon. So no drug dealers – my wife always got a lot of fantasy.
The welcome at B&B Cancun was overwhelming. Veronica and Peter had some hamburgers that Peter put on the grill for us and we had dinner together. For us it was just perfect after the long cycling day and we had such a nice evening. Veronica and Peter really are amazing hosts, incredible friendly and helpful. We really recommend staying here if you should look for a place to stay in Cancun!
