Unawatuna-Deniyaya: Meeting the scorpoin

Monday January 20, 2014, 91 km (57 miles) – Total so far: 1,208 km (751 miles)

It took us a while until we found the A 12 to Deniyaya, so we did some extra-kms, but not too bad. We were happy to get away from the heavy traffic of the main road down at the coast line. The road was climbing very softly and we enjoyed the ride.

We met a guy riding the other direction and he told us, the climb would only get steep on the last 5 to 10 kms, so we already could imagine the track.
Suddenly once again a big slowly walking varan crossed the street. It´s amazing how relaxed they move, even if you get close. Seems they wouldn´t hurry up for nothing, it´s so nice to watch them.

The next fauna-sensation was a big, black scorpion. It´s not such an relaxed animal like the varans, and as we got close it lifted his poisoned tail, to defend itself. Looked like it didn´t want to escape-a real warrior.

At night we showed the picture to our host, and he told us that it was a poisonous one.Arriving at Deniyaya, the guesthouse was fully booked, but the owner send us to his brother´s guesthouse some 1,5km away (in the end it was 3km far away).

We found it, but it was still „under construction“. The owner had opened just 3 months before and had to improvise still a lot of things. The room he could offer was very small with no bathroom, but he already run his small restaurant, and we had at least a very nice homemade dinner at the end of the day.
