Wednesday January 11, 2012, 60 km (37 miles) – Total so far: 104 km (65 miles)
If you know you got pedal 32km always going up, you think you are mentally prepared, but still reality can be hard. We started at 6.30 pm and from stepping out the front door of our hostel, the road was going up. To the top of Irazu you got to pass over 2000m of altitude, so the climbs are quite steep all the time, up to 17%.
t’s a tough ride, and we had to do many breaks to get breath again before we could go on. I could feel that I was missing a little bit of condition due to an infection of my lungs I suffered 1 week ago in Germany. At the moment I’m still taking antibiotics and I guess I could feel that. The landscape although was worth the exhausting pedalling, the views of the clouds surrounding the mountains are breathtaking and motivate the tired legs to go on.
Unfortunately, we just reached the top at the time they were clothing the gates of the area (national park!) of the crater, so we missed this part. But anyway the riding was overwhelming. And the downhill thing is just awesome. We were speeding up to 65 km!
What a nice day!
