156 km (97 miles) – Total so far: 917 km (570 miles)
I started cycling today at 6:30 a.m. The weather was cloudy and I thought it probably would start to rain. But I was lucky, and actually it didn´t rain at all all day. There was quite a lot of traffic – many big trucks with double trailers.
Somehow I like these „road-monsters“ and at the same time I hate them when they pass me close. Thanks god today I had no hassle at all with that. They all respected me on the bike as an equal road user and all passed me with enough space. Unnecessary to mention that the road was going up and down all the time altogether 774m difference in altitude today.
First I thought of sleeping in Constitucion which is a small village about 85km away from Xpujil. But when I arrived I found that there were no posadas at all – nothing. While I was asking for a place to sleep a lady offered me a room. But: not even a fan in there, so I said thank you. No way!! In the end I bought some more water and some snacks and I kept going.
After a while the pavement of the road changed. It got rough to cycle, and I could not go as fast as before. In exchange for that nature was beautiful. In some parts it looked like a jungle then again turned into agriculture fields. Nice. Besides I saw the most funny road sign ever today: Beware of the bats!!
I arrived at Escarcega before it was getting dark. A small ugly town. I checked out the first posada I saw- bingo. I took a shower and I went to eat. There weren´t many opportunities. Finally I ate some lamb stew with tortillas. After I bought some bananas and snacks for tomorrow. Hopefully I find a place to sleep before „Chable“ tomorrow, if not, I will have to cycle 160kms again. We´ll see……
