66 km (41 miles) – Total so far: 838 km (521 miles)

Originally we wanted to cycle to „Nueva X-Can“ and from there to „Puerto Morelos“. After talking to this cyclist from Mexico yesterday we thought it would be better if we changed our plans.

He recommended going to „Tulum“ and from there to cycle up to „Cancun“ finally. O.K., let´s do this! In the evening we tried to check out a little bit the hostels in „Tulum“ and we realized that everything was not only very expansive there but also that the spot was crowded.

Hardly any room was available and as for the coastline – forget it. So we changed the plan once again. We decided to cycle direction „Tulum“ but to stop after some 60km in „Coba“ and then from there cycle on. In fact to „Tulum“ but passing the town. We would stop somewhere on the coast after we had passed it. We decided to visit them tomorrow in the morning as today in the afternoon the entrance fee was more than three times more as the usual one (normally 70 MXP, from 4.30p.m. on 225MXP). They say it´s because people can enjoy and take pictures of the sunset and that the employees at the ticket office get an overtime payment for staying longer at work. Welcome to another creative way of making money!!

So when we left Valladolid in the early morning the road was easy to cycle. Big roadway, wide shoulders and no curves at all. We were almost happy to take the turn to Coba in between because it meant at least for once a change of direction….

Cobra is a nice spot with a big lake where a lot of crocodiles are supposed to live in – at least that is what the locals say. The village during the day is almost overrun by tourists as there is a big archeological site here, the mayan ruins of Coba.
