Uvita: Parque National Ballena

Wednesday February 1, 2012, 12 km (7 miles) – Total so far: 1,248 km (775 miles)

We got up a little bit later than usual, had some nice breakfast in the Tucan hotel and afterwards left for the new location. Riding down to the beach we saw many occasions to sleep, all cabanias right on the beach, but all looked a little bit run down and I hoped ours would look better.

Actually it was like this, a nice and cosy spot on the beach, but unfortunately all cabanias they offered came without private bathroom. As we didn`t like that we went on looking for a place to stay. Finally we found a good place, not right on the beach, but close to it and as it was still early, we decided to visit the National Parque „Ballenas“.

Almost all places with entry fee charge tourists much more than inhabitants of Costa Rica pay. Here the owner of our place told us it would cost 1000 Colones, which is 2 USD, but when we came their, foreigners had to pay 6 USD each, what sometimes makes you feel slightly discriminated (But we know this from many other countries, its not a Costa Rica thing).

The parque itself is a big, very nice, sandy beach with the jungle in the background. There is no infrastructure at all, no drinks to buy, no chair to sit on, just nothing. Pura natura. You`ve got very nice views of the ocean and you can go swimming or take long walks on the beach. Wildlife is actually missing.

We walked on the beach, went to swim and returned. On the way we had one of these wonderful „Batidas“, how they call the smoothies here. Fruit is absolutely tasty here and the „Batidas“ are delicious no matter what taste you choose. That will surely be one of the things we will be missing back home!!
